Mezcal Makers
We visit a small and non-commercialized palenque, a mezcal factory, in Santa Catarina Minas, a small village at an hours’ drive from Oaxaca. Here we will see the plantations where the agave is grown, and if we’re lucky we will even find a palenquero showing us the harvesting process (this depends on if there are agaves ready to be harvested, so it will not always be the case). We will get a tour at the factory where you will learn about the different types of mezcal and how it is made. The tour includes a mezcal tasting and lunch at the palenque. An English speaking guide tells you all about the history and customs related to the drinking of mezcal, so you will get a close understanding of how important and all-present this drink is in the daily life of the Oaxacan people, especially in the traditional communities.

Marvelous Monte Albán
A guided visit to Monte Alban is a must-do when you are in Oaxaca! This Zapotec archeological site is situated beautifully on a flattened hilltop at a 20 minutes drive from the center of Oaxaca. The city was the capital of the Zapotec culture, that dates back to 600 b.C. but was at its peak from 500-750 a.C. Our certified guide will show you the temples of the ceremonial centre, rests of houses and tumbs, and show you the endemic trees and plants on the site. You can also visit the site museum, and have a coffee or beer at the site’s restaurant before we head back to Oaxaca.
The tour takes around 4 hours out and about, and you decide what time you want to take it. Have your own transport? Then you will receive a discount and meet the guide at the ruins.

The Zapotec town of San Bartolo Coyotepec is known for its century long production of black pottery, but there is so much more to discover. On this tour, we will show you how an indigenous, Zapotec community works. You will get an in-depth knowledge of the social order, where the administrative power goes hand in hand with the ceremonial and religious one, something very common in the indigenous Latin American culture. You will learn about the values and traditions of the community and the way they work together in economic activities, with a major focus on sustainable and eco-friendly development. The tour is led by antropologist Leopoldo Meyer.

Walking Oaxaca

Idyllic Hierve el Agua
The petrified waterfalls of Hierve el Agua (‘the water boils’) are a marvel of nature. The two waterfall-like rock formations make for a great day trip out of the city and into nature. At Hierve el Agua, you can swim in one of the cold (!) water basins, hike the area to appreciate the rock formations from different sides, take stunning pictures and have a cold michelada at one of the several food stalls.
